Cristiano Ronaldo has rejected Real Madrid’s offer of an extension to his current contract with the nine-time European champions, according to Spanish daily AS.

The Portuguese has been enjoying some of his best years with Los Blancos, since his arrival from Manchester United, but the team have not achieved the same level of success that the star was able to inspire in England.

Ronaldo’s contract at Real Madrid runs until 2015, and it is believed the club’s desire to tie him down for a further three years after that is facing some difficulty.

The issue is made even stranger given that club president Florentino Perez had last week vowed to do everything he could to extend the contract, and make him "the best-paid player in the world".

However, reports of the winger making himself unavailable for Real Madrid’s final two games of the season on apparent injury grounds have fanned the flames of a transfer, despite claims that he will not be sold even if a €1 billion offer comes forward.

The 28-year-old has scored a remarkable 201 goals in 199 appearances for Real Madrid, and sporting director Zinedine Zidane expects him to continue his stay in the Spanish capital.

Manchester United were tipped as a possible destination for Ronaldo – who spent six profitable years at Old Trafford – in case talks break down, but former manager Sir Alex Ferguson had previously insisted he did not see the return happening.

Alongside their pursuit of Ronaldo’s contract extension, Real Madrid are also eyeing a move for Tottenham Hotspur star Gareth Bale, who recently claimed he would be "honoured" to listen if Perez came with an offer.
