English Premier League giants Manchester United have announced Uruguayan defender Guillermo Varela has signed a five-year contract at the club.

The 20-year-old becomes the first signing for the Red Devils under new manager David Moyes.



“Varela impressed in a two-week trial at Carrington in May and will now vie with Chilean striker Angelo Henriquez (signed in September 2012 but loaned to Wigan Athletic shortly afterwards) to become the 11th South American to make a first-team appearance for the Reds”, a club statement read.

The defender is now delighted to join the club and is looking ahead to plying his trade with the 20-time English league champions.

The former Penarol player will represent Uruguay at the Under-20 World Cup in Turkey, which kicks-off from 21st June.

He played mostly as a right full-back for his previous club.

He is also relishing the prospect of settling in soon into Manchester United’s dressing room, and has explained that he is lucky to find quite a few Spanish-speaking players.

“I’m very lucky there are quite a few Spanish-speakers here. It will certainly help me settle in”, Varela added.
