English Premier League side Stoke City have contacted the agent of PSV Eindhoven left-back Erik Pieters, but an agreement has not yet been reached, with no concrete offer having landed at present, according to Voetbal Primeur.

The Potters have put the 24-year-old Dutch international firmly on their agenda and he is one of the key figures on new manager Mark Hughes’ shopping list this summer.

Pieters has a contract with the Eredivisie giants until next summer, and the club are considering the option of cashing in on the player this summer, before he becomes a free agent during this period next year.

Meanwhile, Netherlands head coach Louis van Gaal has advised the former Utrecht player not to seek a move to the mid-level Premier League club, as he feels the average level in the top tier of English football is not much higher than the Eredivisie.

Pieters has clocked up just eight appearances for his club and country in the 2012/13 season, scoring once. He suffered his share of injuries over the last season, which restricted his playing time.

He has earned 17 caps for the Oranje at international level.
