Former Arsenal midfielder Denilson has opted to remain in his homeland despite significant interest in his services from clubs in Europe, by signing a permanent contract with Sao Paulo.

Denilson was released by the Gunners earlier this month following the expiry of his contract at the Emirates Stadium.

The midfielder had spent the last two seasons on loan back in Brazil at Sao Paulo – and now he has chosen to continue his career at the club.

Denilson has penned a deal lasting until 2017 with the Brazilian giants.

The midfielder was bought by Arsenal in 2006 and tipped for big things.

He did manage to make 108 appearances for the Gunners, but failed to deliver on the expectations placed on his shoulders.

Now the 25-year-old will bid to help Sao Paulo improve on their fourth place finish in last season’s Brazilian top flight.
