Sunderland are poised to make a quick recovery from the potential loss of Simon Mignolet to Liverpool, by eyeing RKC Waalwijk and Holland Under-21 man Jeroen Zoet, according to Dutch daily the Algemeen Dagblad.

Zoet, whose contract at parent club PSV Eindhoven runs until next summer, has been on loan with Waalwijk for the past two years, and reports have indicated he may choose a permanent deal with the latter.

However, with Sunderland set to lose Mignolet this summer, a move for Zoet could be high on the agenda for manager Paolo Di Canio, given his performances.

Zoet’s nine clean sheets out of 33 Eredivisie games were key to Waalwijk maintaining their top flight status with a 14th-placed finish.

The 22-year-old has endured a tougher time at the European Under-21 Championship, with four goals conceded in three starts, but it is understood scouts from Sunderland were present at Saturday’s game between Holland and Italy.

Zoet is yet to make his senior debut for Holland, but does boast 20 games under his belt for the Under-21s.

His performances for PSV’s youth set-up had prompted a promotion to the senior side in 2009, but he could not manage even a single appearance in the league.

Conversely, the loan spell at Waalwijk had resulted in attraction from abroad, with Tottenham Hotspur linked with a move for him back in April of last year.
