The door has been left open for Toby Alderweireld’s suitors to nudge ahead of Bayer Leverkusen in the race for his services after the Bundesliga side confirmed they are having trouble sealing the deal.

Leverkusen have been pushing hard to capture the Belgian centre-back from Ajax and the player’s father admitted recently that they are leading the chase for his son.

But getting the deal for Alderweireld over the line, who is also popular in England, having been strongly linked with Liverpool, Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle, is proving to be a little tricky.

"The asking price that Ajax have asked for seems a little high", Leverkusen CEO Wolfgang Holzhauser told the Kolner Stadt-Anzeiger.

And all is not quite well on Alderweireld’s side too, with the player’s father Vic Alderweireld admitting that Leverkusen still have work to do on his son’s salary.

"The proposal from Leverkusen was interesting from a sporting point of view, but financially we still had some questions.

"We have made a counter proposal and we will now see how Leverkusen react."

Alderweireld’s contract at Ajax expires next summer and he has resisted penning an extension in search of greener pastures.

The Dutch giants are believed to want in the region of €7.5m for the Belgian stopper.
