English Premier League side Southampton have made an offer of €20m to buy Internacional striker Leandro Damiao, according to Sky Italia.

Southampton are now poised to hold talks with the Brazilian club as they look to tie up the deal and take the Selecao international to St. Mary’s Stadium.

The Saints’ move is an ambitious one, given that Damiao has been a long-time target for fellow English side Tottenham Hotspur.

Spurs pushed hard to sign the striker in the January transfer window, but were unable to reach an agreement with Internacional.

Their interest has not gone away though, while in Italy, Napoli are monitoring developments, well aware they may need to replace Edinson Cavani.

In Germany, beaten Champions League finalists Borussia Dortmund, flush with cash from selling Mario Gotze to Bayern Munich, have been linked with Damiao too.

It remains to be seen if the Saints can tie up what could be a complex deal for the striker, but they are sending a statement of intent in the summer transfer market at the very least.
