Toby Alderweireld’s list of future clubs has seen one name ruled out with Bayer Leverkusen finding the Arsenal and Liverpool-linked player too expensive for their coffers.

The Ajax star returned to pre-season training on Monday, but was unsurprisingly non-committal on whether a new club had been found for him.

Arsenal and Liverpool were the English clubs hoping to fight it out for Alderweireld, but Leverkusen also had considerable muscle behind them, backed by formal interest in the player.

However, it seems the Bundesliga giants will be pulling out of the race owing to the transfer’s potential financial impact, even if the centre-back’s reported price is at a relatively low €10m.

His contract expires next summer, while his agent Soren Lerby told Voetbal International: "Leverkusen have notified us that they find Toby too expensive and they have started focusing on other players.

"It may be that they come back later in the transfer window. [But for now] several other clubs have been enquiring about Toby. We will wait and see how things go."

The Belgian showcased his skills well last season, with 33 Eredivisie games and six in the Champions League, as Ajax wrapped up their third-straight league title with relative ease.
