Southampton are continuing talks to sign Internacional striker Leandro Damiao, but Napoli could yet hijack the deal.

Damiao is a man in demand and the Saints are pushing hard to wrap up a deal for a hitman they know continues to be coveted by a great many clubs.

The Brazil international has long been admired by Tottenham Hotspur, who made a serious effort to sign him in January, while last month the striker’s agent insisted a lack of Champions League football had not taken the White Hart Lane outfit out of the running to sign his client.

He has also been linked with Borussia Dortmund, while Napoli have now firmly joined the race.

According to Sky Italia, Damiao’s agent met with Southampton representatives yesterday, while Napoli moved to put themselves firmly in the mix for the 23-year-old.

Rafael Benitez’s men are bracing themselves to lose Edinson Cavani to Paris Saint-Germain and are keen to bag an equally high-profile replacement.

Damiao would fit the bill, but Southampton appear to be in the driving seat for the Brazil star at present.
