Norwich City are interested in Ajax defender Toby Alderweireld and have contacted the Dutch club’s sporting director Marc Overmars about the Belgian.

Alderweireld has just one year left on his contract at Ajax and is in the market for a move to a bigger league. He has been strongly linked with Liverpool in England, while Bundesliga outfit Bayer Leverkusen had held talks with Ajax and the player’s representatives, but failed to find an agreement; indeed, Alderweireld’s camp were disappointed with the personal terms on offer at the BayArena, while Leverkusen found Ajax’s asking price too high.

Leverkusen could yet return for Alderweireld, while Liverpool have started to firm up their interest in the 24-year-old – but Norwich are now also very much in the race.

"I understand that they have made contact with Marc Overmars", the Belgian’s agent Soren Lerby told Dutch daily De Telegraaf.

"Toby has left Ajax’s training camp in Austria due to personal circumstances and I haven’t been able to speak to him about Norwich.

"I don’t know how Toby sees the transfer."

Norwich have been active in the summer transfer market already, completing the capture of Dutch striker Ricky van Wolfswinkel and English winger Nathan Redmond.

And Ajax have already secured a replacement for Alderweireld in Mike van der Hoorn.
