Norwich City appear poised to win the race for Ajax defender Toby Alderweireld, with the player ready to make the move to Carrow Road.

The Canaries have made contact with Ajax and are confident of reaching an agreement with the Dutch champions, who have been searching for a sum of around €10m for Alderweireld.

Liverpool have been consistently linked with the Belgian, while Bayer Leverkusen spoke to Ajax and the player’s representatives recently. However, the Bundesliga club baulked at Ajax’s asking price and the defender’s personal terms.

Now, with Norwich in the fray, a move could be close.

According to Voetbal International, Alderweireld is ready to sign for the Premier League club and is set to head to England later this week to hold talks with the Canaries.

It remains to be seen if Liverpool will move to rival Norwich, after talk they were stepping up their interest in the Belgium international.

A transfer to Norwich though seems a straightforward option for Alderweireld, who is desperate to take the next step in his career and play in a more competitive league than the Eredivisie.
