Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is believed to be plotting a swoop for AC Milan defender Ignazio Abate.

According to Tutto Mercato, the 26-year-old right-back is on Wenger’s shortlist of potential summer signings, with the Frenchman a firm admirer of the defender’s talents.

Abate, who is a product of Milan’s youth system, has made 14 appearances for Italy and is out of contract next summer.

Wenger may then spy an opportunity to take advantage of the Italian’s expiring contract by lodging a tempting bid with the Rossoneri.

Abate appeared in three games for Italy at this summer’s Confederations Cup. Last season he managed 27 appearances for Massimiliano Allegri’s men in Serie A, while also featuring four times in the Champions League.

An Arsenal swoop for Abate would place further question marks over the future of Gunners right-back Bacary Sagna.

The French defender’s contract with Arsenal expires in 2014 and he has been consistently linked with a move away from the Emirates Stadium.
