Chelsea have made a late jump into the bidding frenzy for Gonzalo Higuain as interest in the Real Madrid striker increases with each passing day.

According to Sky Italia, the Blues are interested in a bid for the Argentina international, which means they will have to fight off the advances of Arsenal as well as Liverpool and Napoli.

The Gunners’ interest has been around for a very long time, but Liverpool today entered the race, in a manner of speaking, as Real Madrid prepare a swap deal that involves Luis Suarez and Higuain trading places.

Chelsea may think twice before getting into a bidding war over Higuain, who is rated at €40m by Los Blancos, but who also boasts 122 goals from 262 games in the Spanish capital.

However, the Blues are now managed by Jose Mourinho who will hope to use some of his influence from his Real Madrid days to boost the Stamford Bridge outfit.

But, with his last few months riddled with reports of "player dissatisfaction", it remains to be seen if Florentino Perez, or indeed manager Carlo Ancelotti, will wish to conduct negotiations with Mourinho.

Real Madrid are, moreover, known for their desire to bring in Suarez, who himself is seeking a move away owing "unfair treatment" from the British media, and that could push the tide away from Chelsea.

Earlier today, Rafael Benitez’s Napoli were understood to be planning a €30m attempt at Higuain’s signature, as the Serie A runners-up seek to fill the void left by Edinson Cavani.
