Ajax defender Toby Alderweireld has insisted he is still in the market to leave Holland this summer, but will not join a club which does not represent a step up.

The Belgium centre-back has just one year left on his contract and Ajax recently accepted an offer of around €8m from Norwich City for the defender.

However, Alderweireld did not agree to a switch to Carrow Road and will not leave simply for the sake of it.

Indeed, the man who has been consistently linked with Liverpool, while clubs such as Newcastle, Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and Roma are thought to be monitoring proceedings, will study his next move carefully.

"The clubs were done, but the overall picture has to be right. If it had been for the money I would have chosen to do it, but I want more. I want to take a real step forward", Alderweireld told Eredivisie Live, addressing the proposed move to Norwich.

"I am happy at Ajax, so I’m not going to simply make that step. I don’t want to play near the bottom, which is not to my advantage."

And the Belgium star insists he still has a number of options.

"There is still some interest, but for now I am waiting patiently.

"I wouldn’t mind staying at Ajax."
