Manchester United have made contact with Real Madrid over signing midfielder Luka Modric, according to Sky Italia.

The Red Devils are desperate to bolster their midfield this summer, but have so far been thwarted at every turn.

The English champions had been confident of signing Thiago Alcantara from Barcelona, but Bayern Munich won the race.

Another target, Kevin Strootman, was busy finalising a switch to Roma while the Red Devils were chasing Thiago, while a bid for Barcelona schemer Cesc Fabregas has been knocked back, with the player hoping to stay on at the Camp Nou.

Now it appears Manchester United have switched their attention to Modric.

The Croatian only joined Real Madrid from Tottenham Hotspur last season, signed by former coach Jose Mourinho, and has much Premier League experience to call upon.

He had a lacklustre first campaign in La Liga, despite making 25 starts, with three goals and six assists, as Los Blancos surrendered the title to Barcelona.

It is believed that with the departure of Mourinho, Real Madrid may be willing to listen to offers for Modric.
