Chelsea have confirmed only their fourth full signing of the summer transfer window, as Cristian Cuevas joins the club on a five-year deal.

Cuevas makes the move from O’Higgins in Chile’s top flight where he has learned the trade since his youth days.

At just 18 years of age, Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has opted for the relative youth of Cuevas, who nonetheless boasts four appearances at this year’s Under-20 World Cup.

The left-back spent two years as an official part of O’Higgins’ senior squad, but his final tally stood at a mere nine games with just five starts.

He has been given a long-term deal at Stamford Bridge, in the hope that he can provide a suitable cover on the flanks, especially given the ageing list of defenders at the club.

A statement on Chelsea’s official site read: "Chelsea Football Club has completed the signing of Cristian Cuevas from Chilean club O’Higgins.

"The 18-year-old has signed a contract until 2018. He came through the youth ranks at O’Higgins before breaking into the first team and playing in the top flight in Chile."
