Liverpool target Toby Alderweireld feels he would be doing Ajax a disservice if he was to leave without any financial benefits, whether or not a move happens this summer.

Ajax have seen Alderweireld emerge as a hot property, as Liverpool and even Bayer Leverkusen fought for his signature.

While Leverkusen have since dropped out, Liverpool remains a possible destination for the player who has one year left on his contract, and rejected a switch to Norwich City earlier this summer.

But for Alderweireld, a contract extension is the least he can do for Ajax if a move does not happen in this transfer window.

"This club have given a lot to me and I owe a lot to Ajax", Alderweireld told De Telegraaf. "If I were to leave for nothing, that would hurt the club and hurt me. That is not an option."

The statement could point the way to an extension soon, even if everyone around him agrees a transfer is more likely outcome.

Yesterday, Alderweireld said that Champions League football was not the most important criteria for him, which means Liverpool still have a chance.

"I know I’m ready for a new step and think everyone also sees this", he added today. "But if it does not come to a transfer now, a new contract is quite logical and Ajax and I will always agree.

"In either case it is about getting good playing time, given that I want to play in the World Cup. Here at Ajax, I have that security.

"I would like to have that at the new club as well or, at least, be given a good opportunity."
