Stoke City boss Mark Hughes has revealed he has taken concrete steps to lure experienced United States international striker Juan Agudelo to England.

Agudelo is currently playing for New England Revolution in Major League Soccer, and has already earned himself 17 caps with the US national team.

The 20-year-old Colombia-born forward was a former New York Red Bulls academy graduate, and even turned out for CD Chivas for a season.

The news comes hot on the heels of reports that the Potters' efforts to sign former Manchester United striker Mame Biram Diouf from Hannover have hit a €20m roadblock.

Agudelo has already bagged two goals in seven games for the Revolution, and Hughes has identified him as one for the future, especially as none of the Potters' other strikers is below 25 years of age.

"It seems there's a willingness from both sides", Hughes told the BBC. "We're hopeful of progressing that.

"We're still in discussions, but if we can do that he's a good young player and we feel he's got good potential."

Stoke have made just two full summer signings so far in Marc Muniesa and Erik Pieters, with Maurice Edu coming returning from his loan stint at Bursaspor.
