Arsenal could be given a welcome boost in the last weeks of the transfer window with news that Paris Saint-Germain are backing off Newcastle United's Yohan Cabaye.

According to L'Equipe, PSG have decided to conclude business for this term's window, despite being recently linked with transfers.

Cabaye and Manchester United's Nani were understood to be lined up for coach Laurent Blanc, as PSG go through a minor crisis.

The Ligue 1 champions have only managed draws in their first two league games, and several options in midfield and defence are being considered.

Regardless, Arsenal will be happy to learn they do not have to compete with PSG's financial muscle after their own failed bid of £10m.

The Gunners had tabled their offer just hours before Newcastle were due to play their Premier League opener against Manchester City.

The timing had not gone down well with Magpies boss Alan Pardew who accused Arsene Wenger of not treating his side with the proper respect.

Cabaye joined Newcastle in the 2011 transfer window from boyhood club Lille and has made 73 appearances for the Tyneside club so far.
