Napoli look to be making a play to beat off competition for Paris Saint-Germain defender Mamadou Sakho.

The France international centre-back has fallen out of favour at the Parc des Princes and is desperate to leave for first team football to make sure of his spot in Didier Deschamps' Les Bleus squad for the 2014 World Cup.

His situation is complicated somewhat by PSG's desire for him to extend his contract, which expires next summer, as a condition of being loaned out for this season.

Sakho has been strongly linked with Liverpool, while AC Milan and Roma have also been mooted as destinations for the 23-year-old.

But Napoli are serious suitors too and, according to Italian daily Gazzetta dello Sport, officials from the club met Sakho's agent yesterday in Milan.

Rafael Benitez's men seem to be intensifying their efforts to sign Sakho before the transfer window closes, but are sure to face competition for the defender.

It remains to be seen where Sakho ends up on 2nd September, but the defender is desperate to ensure he is not still at PSG.
