Liverpool are believed to be closing on a deal to sign Mamadou Sakho from French champions Paris Saint-Germain.

According to French sports daily L'Equipe, the Reds are pushing towards an agreement to sign the 23-year-old, with PSG wanting between €16m and €18m to allow the defender to make a permanent move.

Sakho is keen to quit the Parc des Princes due to concerns over playing time in a World Cup year.

PSG have strengthened their defensive options again this summer, while Brazilian pair Alex and Thiago Silva are currently coach Laurent Blanc's preferred partnership at the back.

Sakho, who is under contract until 2014, has also interested AC Milan and Roma, though the latter have pulled out due to the costs involved.

Liverpool are scurrying around to sign another centre-back, with injuries to Sebastian Coates and Kolo Toure having forced their hand.

The situation is developing rapidly as the transfer window clock ticks down to closure on 2nd September.
