Roma have rejected an offer of just €12m for midfield icon Daniele De Rossi from Manchester United, according to Italian daily Corriere della Sera.

The English Premier League champions have been looking around furiously for a new midfielder this summer and their efforts are being intensified as the end of the transfer window draws closer.

De Rossi now appears to have popped up on the Red Devils' radar, but Roma wasted little time in turning down a bid of just €12m for the Italy international.

The player had been the subject of interest from Chelsea and Manchester City earlier this summer, but new Roma coach Rudi Garcia assured De Rossi of his importance and the midfielder pledged his loyalty to the Giallorossi.

It remains to be seen whether Manchester United will return with an improved offer before 2nd September, but Roma will be reluctant to release De Rossi with little time to replace him.

The Giallorossi have significantly reinforced this summer, notably bringing in Kevin Strootman from PSV Eindhoven and Gervinho from Arsenal.
