VfB Stuttgart have confirmed the signing of Karim Haggui from their Bundesliga rivals Hannover 96.

The centre-back has signed a two-year deal with the Mercedes-Benz Arena outfit, with an option for a further year.

He made 132 appearances in all competitions for his former employers, netting eight times.

Stuttgart’s sporting director, Fredi Bobic, has said that an injury to Georg Niedermeier and the transfer of Serdar Tasci to Spartak Moscow meant that the club had to look for defensive reinforcements.

And he feels that the Haggui’s acquisition will strengthen his side, as the player has a lot of experience.

"After the change of Serdar Tasci and the injury-induced loss of Georg Niedermeier we wanted to step up on the defensive again", Bobic told the club’s official site.

"Karim brings great experience – both in terms of the Bundesliga as well as international competitions. We're expecting of him that he is rapidly integrated with us and strengthened our squad accordingly."

The 29-year-old counts RC Strasbourg and Bayer Leverkusen amongst his former clubs.

Haggui has been capped 80 times by Tunisia and has six international goals to his name.
