Barcelona sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta insists the Catalan giants did their best to sign Thiago Silva from Paris Saint-Germain.

The Spanish champions had targeted snapping up a centre-back in the transfer window and, while Silva remained the club's first choice target, they were also linked with Chelsea defender David Luiz and Liverpool stopper Daniel Agger.

In the end only Brazilian striker Neymar was added to Barcelona's ranks.

But Zubizarreta is not disappointed and pointed out that in the case of Silva, the club did all they could.

"We did our best", he told a press conference.

"He chose PSG and that is a matter for him.

"Not everyone gets up every morning thinking about how wonderful Barca are, although most of the [players] are happy to come."

PSG had made it clear from the outset that they were unwilling to sell Silva to Barcelona, having only snapped up the defender last summer from AC Milan.

Zubizarreta meanwhile will not dwell on a defender not signed and feels coach Gerardo Martino has a good squad at his disposal.

"We did not get the centre-back that was our goal, but we have the squad we want. I'm delighted with it."
