Ander Herrera was being truthful when he said he had not reached an agreement with Manchester United, believes the midfielder's Athletic Bilbao team-mate Ibai Gomez.

Manchester United made a bid for Herrera, which they saw knocked back by the Basque giants, who declared the player could only leave if his release clause of €36m was met.

Speculation raged on transfer deadline day that the English champions would do just that, with claims from some quarters that Herrera had already agreed to move to Old Trafford, while confusion abounded over laywers at La Liga headquarters, reportedly ready to present the buy-out cheque.

But Herrera himself claimed on Wednesday that there was no agreement with Manchester United.

And Gomez for one believes him.

"He was totally honest", the striker was quoted as saying by Spanish daily Marca.

Gomez also welcomed Herrera's continued stay at the club.

"It's excellent news because he is a great player and a great person both on and off the pitch."
