AC Milan and Inter Milan are keeping a close eye on Xabi Alonso's situation at Real Madrid, ahead of launching a possible swoop to take the 31-year-old to Italy.

According to Italian daily Il Sussidiario, Alonso is a popular figure with both Milan clubs, who would be willing to roll out the red carpet for the former Liverpool schemer.

Alonso's situation at Real Madrid is far from clear, with the Spanish side having yet to extend a contract which runs out in the summer of 2014.

And with Real Madrid boasting a number of midfield options, one of the reasons Mesut Ozil was sold to Arsenal, Alonso may find himself pushed out at the Bernabeu.

The midfielder joined Real Madrid in 2009 from Liverpool and was quickly hailed for his influence in the middle of the park.

Currently Alonso is sidelined through injury and has missed out on the chance to fight off the club's new midfield arrivals.

He is due to be on the sidelines until the end of November.
