Tottenham Hotspur have made Zenit St. Petersburg left-back Domenico Criscito a priority January acquisition, as they step up their hunt for the 26-year-old.

Criscito is being monitored by two clubs in his homeland, in the form of AC Milan and Inter, but it is Spurs who are leading the race to capture the defender, according to Russian outlet Sport.ru.

The defender moved to Russia in 2011, when swapping Genoa for Zenit, and teaming up with compatriot coach Luciano Spalletti in the process.

Criscito helped Zenit to win the Russian Premier League title in the 2011/12 campaign, while last term they finished as runners-up behind CSKA Moscow.

The Italian is under contract with Zenit until 2016, leaving the Russian giants very much in the driving seat over his future.

Nevertheless, Spurs are expected to launch a raid for the left-back when the transfer window opens once again in January.

Despite going on a summer spending spree of over £100m, there is still money available for the club's boss Andre Villas-Boas to spend to reinforce the side midway through the campaign.
