Bayer Leverkusen manager Sami Hyypia's "internship" under Roy Hodgson has given the ex-Liverpool player plenty of food for thought, amid his dream of managing the Reds one day.

Hyypia spent time under the England coach during the international break which was, in fact, his second time being mentored by Hodgson in his career, having played under him for Finland in 2006/07.

Centre-back Hyypia won a Champions League and a UEFA Cup during his decade with Liverpool, in addition to several domestic cups, and has previously expressed a desire to manage the Reds one day.

"The internship was a very interesting experience for me", Hyypia told Bayer Leverkusen's official website.

"I have known Roy Hodgson during my time as a player in the Finnish national team. I appreciate him giving me this opportunity and I was very happy with it.

"What was especially exciting was to experience first hand the processes in the England team's training centre. I am determined to feed these experiences into my work and continue to bring success as a coach."

Hyypia's internship ended on a positive note as England pulled off a 4-1 win over Montenegro in their second-last World Cup qualifier.

"To see England play at Wembley is extraordinary for football lovers", Hyypia added. "It was my first time there since the stadium's reconstruction.

"Fortunately England clearly won, otherwise I would have had a guilty conscience that a defeat might well have been because of me!"
