Napoli are monitoring Thomas Vermaelen's situation at Arsenal following a recent admission from the Belgium defender that sitting on the bench is not good news in a World Cup year.

Vermaelen has slipped firmly behind Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny in the Gunners centre-back pecking order, leading to growing concern over his predicament.

Vermaelen has explained that he will not "panic" but with Belgium now safely through to the World Cup finals in Brazil, pressure for him to play regular first team football will grow in his homeland.

And according to Italian outlet Calcio Mercato, Napoli could attempt to take advantage of Vermaelen's situation in London.
