Borussia Dortmund have categorically denied defender Mats Hummels has been allowed to leave for Barcelona.

Hummels, who was on international duty with Germany earlier this week, became heavily linked with a move to Barcelona yesterday, after reports that Dortmund had sanctioned the move.

Dortmund were believed to be eyeing up FC Basel's Fabian Schar as a replacement, as Hummels was tipped as a similar purchase to suceed Barcelona's Carlos Puyol.

However, Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke issued a short statement regarding the rumours, telling broadcasters ZDF: "This is nonsense. This is a non-story. There's nothing to it."

The Hummels speculation centred around a switch next summer, even as his contract only expires in 2017.

Reports had even claimed that a €35m price tag was being put on Hummels by Dortmund.

The Germany international helped his team cement World Cup qualification on Monday with a 5-3 win over Sweden, which was Hummels' first competitive national appearance for over a year.
