Simon Mignolet has expressed his desire to play for Belgium in next year’s World Cup in Brazil.

The custodian, who joined the Reds from Sunderland during the summer transfer window, has been in great form for the Merseyside club.

But the 25-year-old has played second fiddle to Atletico Madrid’s Thibaut Courtois while on international duty in World Cup qualification.

However, Mignolet has vowed to work hard and put in more impressive displays in a Liverpool shirt in order to become Belgium’s number one choice in between the sticks at the World Cup.

"That's what I try to do – I want to play again, not only here but for Belgium", the goalkeeper told his club’s official site.

"My performances with Liverpool can only help me to get back into the team.

"I'll try to work hard and do my best to make sure that when the World Cup comes, I'll be there."

Mignolet further added that Belgium are delighted to qualify for the World Cup after missing out on the previous two editions and stated that his country are looking forward to the football carnival in the Samba nation next summer.

"We've managed to get ourselves back in the World Cup – it's been 12 years since Belgium last qualified for it”, he said.

"So we're very pleased, not only for the team but for the fans back in Belgium, who can look forward to a summer in Brazil."
