Schalke have been dealt a fresh injury blow with news that Marco Hoger will be sidelined for the rest of the season with a ligament tear in his knee.

The Royal Blues were given a boost with Kevin-Prince Boateng's recovery from a knee injury, but with Klaas-Jan Huntelaar ruled out for 2013, the Hoger news is most unwelcome.

Boateng's recovery comes just in time for Schalke's Champions League game against Chelsea tonight, while Hoger picked up the injury in last weekend's clash against Eintracht Braunschweig.

Scans revealed the extent of the injury, and he has already undergone surgery, on the same day that Huntelaar had his.

The latter is suffering from a "partial tear of the medial collateral ligament" and will not feature again until 2014.

A statement on Schalke's website yesterday read: "In another personnel setback for the Royal Blues it has been revealed that the knee injury that forced Marco Hoger to hobble off in Saturday's Bundesliga fixture at Eintracht Braunschweig is a partial tear of a cruciate ligament in his right knee.

"The 24-year-old midfielder [was] operated on by Dr Ulrich Boenisch in Augsburg on Monday and looks set to be sidelined for the rest of the season.

"Hoger is thus the second Schalke player to have surgery at the Hessingpark Clinic today. Klaas-Jan Huntelaar underwent an operation with Dr Boenisch after sustaining a partial tear of the medial collateral ligament in his right knee in training last week.

"The procedure went well and, as expected, the striker will be ruled out for the rest of this year."
