Benfica midfielder Nicolas Gaitan is attracting admiring eyes from Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur as the clock ticks down to the opening of the January transfer window.

Both Manchester United and Tottenham have money to spend in the new year and each are keen to bolster their side to help a second half of the season surge in the Premier League.

According to Portuguese daily A Bola, the English duo are watching Gaitan's form closely, as they ponder whether to lodge an official bid with Benfica for the Argentine.

Gaitan has consistently been linked with English clubs over the last 18 months, but Benfica have proven successful in keeping hold of the 25-year-old.

That may again be tested in January, by which time Benfica could have exited the Champions League; the Lisbon giants look to be involved in a battle with Olympiacos for second spot in Group C.

Gaitan joined Benfica in 2010, completing a switch from Argentine giants Boca Juniors.

So far the left-sided midfielder has made eight appearances for Benfica this season, appearing in both the Portuguese top flight and the Champions League.
