Merseyside giants Liverpool are thought to be planning a swoop for Bayer Leverkusen's creative playmaker Sidney Sam, according to Tutto Mercato.

Andre Schurrle's BayArena departure in the summer to embark on a new journey with Premier League stalwarts Chelsea opened up an opportunity for Sam to shine.

Indeed, the 25-year-old playmaker has been Leverkusen's driving force this season, scoring 11 goals and providing six assists in 15 appearances overall to bring Die Werkself to third place in the Bundesliga.

And such performances appear to have caught the attention of Liverpool, who are now believed to be pondering a move for the Germany international.

The Anfield outfit will want to solidify their status as title challengers after a blistering start to the season, and the arrival of Sam in January might well tilt the odds in their favour.

Sam started his professional career with Hamburg's "B" team in 2006. He was promoted to the senior team two years later, but found first-team football with Die Rothosen elusive.

After two consecutive seasons on loan with Kaiserslautern, Sam left the confines of the Imtech Arena to join Leverkusen.

Sam's current contract is set to expire in 2015.
