Chelsea are set to be involved in the race to sign Schalke starlet Max Meyer, according to German outlet SportBild.

Meyer has been in fine form for the Gelsenkirchen side so far this season, with displays belying his tender age of just 18 years old.

And this has not gone unnoticed, with Liverpool already haven taken more than a glance in the German's direction.

Now Chelsea, who raided the Bundesliga this summer to snap up Andre Schurrle from Bayer Leverkusen, are inserting themselves into the race for Meyer.

The Blues have shifted their focus towards the recruitment of young talents in recent years and Meyer would fit the bill for Mourinho's fledgling side.

Schalke however are understandably not keen on losing the midfielder, who has made losing Lewis Holtby to Tottenham Hotspur earlier this year a blow easily absorbed.

Meyer is under contract with Schalke until the summer of 2017.
