Serie A leaders Roma are plotting a raid on Manchester United for Nemanja Vidic.

The Giallorossi have started the season in superb fashion and are currently perched at the top of the Serie A standings; an even more impressive feat when considering it is coach Rudi Garcia's first campaign in charge of the club.

Garcia will be backed in January, following a summer spending spree which saw the likes of Gervinho and Kevin Strootman arrive, and the Frenchman is already thinking to the future.

According to Italian daily Corriere dello Sport, the former Lille boss is taken with Vidic and has been encouraged by the Serbian's contractual situation at Manchester United.

The tough-tackling centre-back's current deal at Old Trafford expires next summer, opening a window of opportunity for suitors.

It remains unclear whether Roma are spying a possible cut-price transfer for Vidic in January or will be prepared to bide their time until July and pick up the Serbian without a fee.

There is though still time for Vidic to pen a new deal with the Premier League champions.
