Liverpool will have to contend with some strong Italian competition for transfer target Kurt Zouma as Inter Milan and Napoli gear up for an approach.

According to RMC, Saint-Etienne defender Zouma is being targeted for a January move by the Serie A giants, this after his agent had revealed in October that the door could be open for Italy.

The Reds were already seeking to continue the summer-window battle with Manchester United over Zouma, who is contracted at Saint-Etienne until 2017.

Zouma is currently on a 10-game domestic suspension – with six left to serve – after breaking Sochaux midfielder Thomas Guerbert's leg in early November.

It has ruled Zouma out until 2014, and could precipitate a move away for the France Under-20 World Cup winner.

Zouma had successfully fended off interest from the likes of Liverpool, Manchester United and Chelsea in the summer at a time when team-mate Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang engineered a big-money move to Borussia Dortmund.

But with Inter boasting a new president – and a potential boost to their transfer kitty – and Napoli always ready to spend, Saint-Etienne's fears will be multiplied by the time January comes around.

The 19-year-old has played all his domestic career with Saint-Etienne, and is on 60 total appearances with the Ligue 1 side.
