Rolland Courbis has emerged as the favourite to land the Montpellier job with club president Louis Nicollin expressing his "love" for the former manager.

Courbis had been the one to resurrect Montpellier's fortunes in 2008/09 as he led them to a second-placed finish in Ligue 2 and subsequent promotion.

He had quit in 2009, but Montpellier could look to him once again after Jean Fernandez was shown the door yesterday with the club languishing just five points above the drop zone.

Montpellier are winless in their last seven games in Ligue 1 and Nicollin told L'Equipe: "Rolland, I love him. I know what he has done for us and what he can still bring.

"But here, I am the boss. And I have not decided yet. I know who I want and who I do not want."

Courbis himself is not averse to rejoining Montpellier, having left Algerian side USM Algers this year following a stint at Ajaccio and the Niger national team.

The former Bordeaux and Toulouse coach said: "Montpellier is a club close to my heart.

"I'm not tired of being regarded as the fireman on duty and, perhaps, one day they will again trust me to build something."
