World Cup Long Way Away, He’ll Be Fit – Argentina Coach Alejandro Sabella on Lionel Messi Recovery

Saturday, 7th December, 2013

Argentina coach Alejandro Sabella is "optimistic" on the chances of Lionel Messi being fit for the World Cup, despite concerns over the Barcelona forward.

Messi's hamstring injury has become the biggest sporting topic in Argentina as well as in Barcelona, who will be without the playmaker until January.

Barcelona manager Gerardo Martino had yesterday expressed hope on the January return, but the bigger picture is around Messi's involvement in the World Cup.

With game time a key factor, Messi is in a race against time, but Sabella told SporTV: "He is making a good recovery and there is a long way to go until the World Cup.

"I am optimistic he will be in good form for his club in Barcelona and with Argentina.

"It's normal to worry about it when you're the team coach. And when the injury is to the best player in the world, the concern is even greater."

Argentina were yesterday drawn against Nigeria, Iran and Bosnia in Group F, in what is seen as one of the easier pools for Brazil 2014.
