Barcelona are eyeing a bold move for Manchester United striker Robin van Persie even as David Moyes rejected claims the striker wanted to leave.

According to Catalan daily Sport, Barcelona could be lining up a €45m approach for Van Persie, who was believed to be unhappy with life at Manchester United.

Indeed, it was being rumoured in the British press that Van Persie had even handed in a transfer request, but that was categorically rejected by Moyes.

Following Saturday's 1-0 defeat to Newcastle United, Moyes was asked about the apparent transfer request, and he said: "That is absolute nonsense.

"I don't know what harder or tougher word I could say to you than that. That's as good as I've got."

Barcelona are in an injury crisis at the moment, not least because of Lionel Messi's absence, and acquiring Van Persie would be a coup.

However, it remains to be seen if Moyes, under pressure in his new job, will commit to the sale given Van Persie's impact last season.

The striker has battled through injury this season but still stands on seven goals in 11 Premier League games.

The Dutchman scored the winner against his old club Arsenal, but was sidelined with a groin strain over the international break meaning he missed the next three league games.

He returned to action on Saturday but was unable to inspire a win as Manchester United slipped to back-to-back home defeats.
