Napoli are waiting for an answer from Liverpool over taking defender Daniel Agger on loan for the rest of the season.

The Serie A outfit are desperate to snare a new centre-back in the January transfer window and have been linked with Arsenal's Thomas Vermaelen, Tottenham's Jan Vertonghen and Agger's Liverpool team-mate Martin Skrtel.

According to Sky Italia, Napoli have contacted Liverpool to test the water over an Agger loan, but are not at all confident the Reds will agree to the switch.

Rafael Benitez's men had targeted Skrtel in the summer, when he appeared out of favour at Anfield, but now the Slovakian has firmly forced his way back into the club's first team.

And despite being Liverpool vice-captain, Agger is now suffering regular bench-warming duties.

The Dane has started only seven of Liverpool's 16 Premier League matches so far this term, but has not pushed to leave the club yet.

Agger has also been consistently linked with Barcelona, who are in the market for a new centre-back.
