Tottenham Hotspur have formally approached Manchester United over a loan for left-back Alexander Buttner, according to Voetbal International.

Buttner is currently on the fringes at Old Trafford and clubs such as Besiktas and Genoa have been linked with giving him better game time.

Spurs are without regular left-back Jan Vertonghen due to injury and Buttner could become an acceptable alternative.

Buttner's agent Aleksandar Bursac today said: "United will only loan him and that's also his preference."

Buttner had been a Celtic target in the summer, while he is hoping to boost his Holland chances with some games in the second half of the season.

The same hope lay with Manchester United even though agreements on sending him out on loan had been fixed for some time.

The 24-year-old, whose contract runs until 2017, has made just six appearances for the Reds across three competitions this season.
