Arsene Wenger has backed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's appointment as Cardiff City manager, believing that the former Manchester United striker can be a success in Wales.

Solskjaer sat next to Cardiff owner Vincent Tan during the Welsh side's 2-0 defeat against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium yesterday.

The Norwegian has been in charge of Molde in his homeland for the last three seasons, winning the domestic title in the first two and the domestic cup last year.

And it is that experience that Wenger believes will stand Solskjaer in good stead in the Premier League.

"He has already experience as a manager in Norway, so he has learned his job", Wenger said via the BBC.

"He was an intelligent player, so he is an intelligent boy as well, and that will help him to be successful.

"It is a chance. Basically what you want when you are young is a chance, and you have to make the maximum of that chance.

"Cardiff has the basic ingredients to survive in the Premier League. You would say if you look at their record they need to add a bit more goals offensively to stay in the league."

Solskjaer will take over a team sitting just outside the Premier League relegation zone with 18 points from 20 games.
