Benfica wanted Chelsea to throw youngsters Gael Kakuta and Oriol Romeu into the deal for Nemanja Matic, but hit a brick wall.

Midfielder Matic completed a €25m switch from Benfica to Chelsea yesterday, returning to the club he left for the Portuguese giants in the January 2011 transfer window.

Benfica had requested the Serbian be included in a deal which took David Luiz to Chelsea – and it paid off handsomely.

And according to Portuguese daily O Jogo, the Lisbon giants had been keen to have a go at repeating the trick when shipping Matic back to Stamford Bridge.

Benfica tried to have forward Kakuta and midfielder Romeu included in the deal.

But while Chelsea were open to the idea, they would not pay more than €20m if the pair were to be included. And this caused Benfica to drop the demand and take €25m cash instead.

Matic has penned a five-and-a-half-year contract at Chelsea.
