Former Manchester City technical coach Angelo Gregucci has recommended Napoli make a move for Chelsea's Michael Essien instead of Tottenham Hotspur's Etienne Capoue.

Napoli have had a bid rejected for Capoue, of €9m, but Spurs are believed to be ready to sell the Frenchman for the right price, meaning he may still end up landing in Italy.

Tottenham only signed Capoue in the summer from Toulouse and were he to join Napoli he would have enjoyed only a short stay in England.

Essien meanwhile is on the radar at AC Milan and is out of the first team picture at Chelsea. The midfielder is keen to find playing time ahead of the World Cup.

And for Gregucci, Essien would be the better buy for Napoli.

"I'd take Essien at this time", he told Radio Crc.

"Capoue is a talented footballer and at Toulouse he had already done very well. He is great physically, he's young and has perspective.

"In England however he has had some difficulties."

Capoue has managed to start just six Premier League games for Spurs this term, although Essien has enjoyed even less action, clocking only two league starts under Jose Mourinho in the current campaign.
