Schalke are keeping their options open over Lewis Holtby after sporting director Horst Heldt insisted the club would not break the bank over the Tottenham Hotspur midfielder.

Schalke have expressed an interest in bringing Holtby back to his old club, after only selling him to Spurs in January last year.

However, Holtby is understood to earn around €4.3m a season at the London club, something that could prove a hindrance for Schalke.

Royal Blues coach Jens Keller has played down hopes of landing Holtby from a similar financial perspective and Heldt is in agreement.

He was quoted by Bild as saying: "We are looking at him, and other options.

"[But] we will not break our financial framework."

Even a loan deal for Holtby would cost Schalke in the region of €1m, despite the 23-year-old seeing his game time reduced at White Hart Lane.

He made 11 appearances in the second half of 2012/13 with just four starts, and has this season seen a similar story with his 12 games in the Premier League.
