Tottenham Hotspur want €8m to sell Lewis Holtby to Schalke, according to German magazine SportBild.

Holtby is a former Schalke player and only left the club this time last year, when Spurs swooped to take advantage of a contract which had been due to expire in the summer.

But life at Spurs has been tough for the Germany international, who is now fretting over his limited game time at the World Cup approaches.

Schalke have been interested in taking Holtby on loan for the remainder of the season, though they have already gone some way towards concluding that financially that is an impossibility.

And it seems likely an outright transfer would be a bridge too far as well.

Schalke's chief problem with signing Holtby is the pay packet he takes home from White Hart Lane which would shatter their internal wage structure.

Indeed, the only way Holtby seems likely to return to his former club is if he takes a substantial pay cut.
