Newcastle United have prompted fresh speculation about Yohan Cabaye's future by making a €13m bid for Lyon's Clement Grenier.

According to L'Equipe, the Magpies have made their move already though it is unlikely to yield a result.

Newcastle yesterday turned down a Paris Saint-Germain offer for Cabaye, who operates in the same position as Grenier.

And Newcastle hunting for a back-up to Cabaye is sure to set transfer speculation going again at St James' Park.

However, Grenier is an asset for Lyon and their president Jean-Michel Aulas, and a deal may not materialise as easily as Newcastle expect.

The 23-year-old was subject to much exit talk last summer as well, though Lyon managed to hold off potential suitors such as Arsenal.

Grenier is contracted at Lyon until 2016 and is expected to remain at the club in a World Cup year, so as to add to his three France caps so far.
