AC Milan have asked Real Madrid about the availability of left-back Fabio Coentrao, according to Italian outlet Sportmediaset.

Coentrao has been consistently linked with the Real Madrid exit door in recent months and came within a whisker of quitting the Bernabeu in the summer.

The Portuguese nearly joined Manchester United on loan, but Real Madrid stopped the move at the last minute after failing to secure a replacement.

Milan are now keen to succeed where Manchester United failed and the club's vice-president Adriano Galliani is believed to have phoned Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti to ask about Coentrao.

Ancelotti's immediate reaction was cool, with the coach not convinced about parting with the defender-cum-midfielder.

However, Galliani has not given up hope of persuading Ancelotti to change his mind and taking Coentrao to the San Siro.

The clock on the transfer window is ticking though.
