Liverpool have jumped into the race for Arsenal right-back Bacary Sagna, according to Sky Italia, even as Inter Milan follow the France international defender.

The Reds are understood to have placed a proposal for a contract in front of Sagna, whose future at Arsenal remains uncertain given his current deal ends this coming summer.

Sagna has begun talks with Arsenal over a contract renewal beyond the summer, with manager Arsene Wenger hopeful on his stay.

The defender, though, will be aware of the interest shown from Italy as Inter Milan weigh up their options.

The Nerazzurri have been publicly very keen on buying attacking talent, but their form this season has suggested the need for defensive reinforcements.

The 31-year-old had been on the radars at Napoli and Paris Saint-Germain as well, but opted against a summer move last year in order to stay put at the Emirates Stadium.

"We try to of course secure Sagna because, for me, he's a very important player for the group", Wenger had said last month.

"But he's fully committed and as long as he stays here he will be fully committed in every single game."

Were Liverpool to sign Sanga he would represent another veteran defender arriving without a fee after they completed the capture of Kolo Toure from Manchester City last summer.
